Grooming not only includes regular wing, nail and beak trimming, but also outfitting your bird’s enclosure with the correct accessories which will allow them to “keep themselves” well groomed. BIRD GROOMING
For both safety and health reasons your companion parrot will require wing and nail clipping several times per year and certain birds develop overgrown beaks which will need attention. The following tips will help make the grooming experience easy:

1. Transport your pet in a bird travel cage or bird carrier. Your pet will be in a foreign environment, other birds or animals are likely to be present and your bird will be under less stress when in the security of a familiar carrier. Most grooming facilities will insist on this for the safety of all concerned. If you do not have a carrier you can purchase one at our retail store.
2. Parrot grooming often requires two people, one that will safely restrain the bird while the other does the procedure. For proper care and the safety of both your parrot and yourself we suggest that grooming is professionally done at Parrots & Company or by a licensed veterinarian.
3. NO discomfort or pain is associated with nail, beak or wing clipping when the procedure is done correctly. As a general rule wings and nails need to be clipped several times per year.

Nail Clipping at Parrots & Company
Pet parrots spend nearly 100% of their time on their feet, with that in mind, nail and foot care should be a priority. Our pet parrots do not benefit from the techniques used by their wild counterparts to grind down the nails or beaks. Flying from place to place wild birds land on a variety of different surfaces and walk on many abrasive surfaces. It’s only logical that wild birds are able to keep their nails in good condition.

Overgrown nails make it difficult and uncomfortable for a bird to perch normally and cause causes discomfort when a parrot is walking on a flat surface. When left untrimmed, nails can become snagged on rope perches, cages, clothing or toys and cause injury. In addition, sharp nails will puncture the skin on your hands and arms when you are handling your bird. Pet parrots need to have their nails regularly clipped. Grooming Perches are also very helpful in this regard.

Wing Clipping
The purpose of clipping your parrots wings is not to prevent flight but rather to render your pet incapable of upward lift or sustained flight. Keeping your birds wings clipped is recommended in most households in order to minimize the risk of injury or escape. Many pet bird owners permit free flight, however, one must be willing to accept the risk and to deal with consequences. Unfortunately, too many bird owners only recognize the importance of keeping wing feathers properly clipped until after their feathered friend has been injured or flown the coop.
