Just like you need a clean room, your bird needs a clean cage. Regular cleaning is super important to keep your pet healthy and happy.
1. Deep Cleaning Your Bird’s Cage: Step-by-Step
You’ll need:
- Rubber gloves
- Bird-safe cage cleaner
- Warm water
- Soft sponges
- Paper towels
- Trash bags
Here’s how:
- Find a safe spot for your bird: Put your bird in a quiet, safe place while you clean.
- Empty the cage: Take out all the toys, food and water bowls, and perches.
- Wash items: Wash each item with warm, soapy water, rinse well, and let them air dry.
- Clean the bottom: Remove any paper or grates from the bottom of the cage and throw them away.
- Scrub the cage: Spray the inside of the cage with the cleaner, let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub with a sponge. Rinse well and dry completely.
- Clean around the cage: Wipe down the area around the cage, like the floor and nearby surfaces.
- Put it back together: Once the cage is dry, put all the clean stuff back in.
How often? Do a deep clean at least once a week. And clean up poop and spilled food every day.

2. Trimming Your Bird’s Nails: A Safe Guide
You’ll need:
- Bird-specific nail clippers
- Nail file
- Styptic powder (just in case)
- Small towel
- Treat for your bird
Here’s how:
- Relax your bird: Make your bird feel calm and safe before you start. Give them a treat or pet them gently.
- Wrap your bird: Gently wrap your bird in a towel, leaving its head free and its feet exposed for handling.
- Find the quick: Look closely at your bird’s nail. The quick is the pink part with blood vessels. Don’t cut into it.
- Clip the nails: Cut off just the tip of the nail. Make small, careful cuts.
- File the nails: Use the nail file to smooth any rough edges.
- Reward your bird: Give your bird a treat after each nail is trimmed.
Extra tips:
- Ask for help: If you’re nervous, ask a vet or a professional groomer for help.
- Be patient: If your bird doesn’t like it, try again later.
- Watch for bleeding: If your bird’s nail bleeds, apply a little styptic powder to stop it.
